Halloween, a holiday that has become synonymous with spooky decorations, costumes, and trick-or-treating, has its roots in ancient festivals. The Celts, who lived in what is now Ireland, Scotland, and the United Kingdom, celebrated Samhain, a festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.
As the veil between the living and the dead was believed to be at its thinnest on this day, the Celts would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off any malevolent spirits. This tradition was later adopted by the Roman Empire and eventually spread throughout Europe.
As Christianity spread throughout Europe, the early Christian church attempted to eliminate the pagan traditions associated with Samhain. In the 7th century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1st as All Saints' Day, followed by All Souls' Day on November 2nd.
Despite these efforts, many of the old traditions persisted and eventually merged with Christianity. The celebration evolved into a night for trick-or-treating, door-to-door begging, and other forms of merriment.
